Coalition Joined Parliamentary Breakfast on Transnational Repression

14 November 2024

On 14 November 2024, the Coalition Against Transnational Repression in Germany took part in a Parliamentary Breakfast held under the patronage of Members of the German Bundestag Michael Brand and Boris Mijatović. The event focused on “Transnational Repression as a Human Rights Challenge: Attacks and Possible Political Responses in Germany.”

The Coalition joined parliamentarians, human rights experts, and affected individuals to discuss the various forms of transnational repression experienced by journalists, students, activists, and members of diaspora communities living in Germany. The discussion shed light on patterns of surveillance, threats, misuse of legal tools, and pressure on family members in countries of origin—issues that continue to receive limited institutional attention in Germany.

During the event, the Coalition presented key insights, highlighted critical gaps in existing protection mechanisms, and emphasized the urgent need for coordinated political, legal, and administrative responses. The programme also featured contributions from Amnesty International and testimonies from affected individuals.

This Parliamentary Breakfast provided a crucial platform to amplify the voices of those targeted by transnational repression and to inform policymakers of the structural reforms needed to ensure safety, accountability, and effective support for at‑risk communities.
