4 July 2024

The Coalition Against Transnational Repression in Germany participated today in a parliamentary discussion hosted by Members of the German Bundestag Frank Schwabe and Derya Türk‑Nachbaur on “Transnational Repression as a Challenge to Democracy in Germany.”

The discussion underscored the growing risks faced by exiled activists, journalists, and human rights defenders in Germany, highlighting the urgent need for stronger institutional mechanisms to protect individuals targeted by foreign governments.

During its intervention, the Coalition emphasized the importance of developing a coordinated national strategy, strengthening protection measures for affected individuals, and recognizing transnational repression as an expanding threat to democratic spaces in Germany.

The Coalition reaffirmed its commitment to continued engagement with German policymakers to enhance safeguards for at‑risk communities and to ensure that Germany remains a safe environment for individuals fleeing persecution.
